Class 3 DSC explained: who needs it and why

A plain-English breakdown of Class 3 certificates, their uses, and how to choose your validity period.

A Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate is the highest assurance level of digital signature issued in India. Unlike lower classes, it requires the applicant to be verified in person — today that happens through a short guided video eKYC rather than an office visit.

Who actually needs one

If you file with the MCA or ROC, submit income tax audit reports, file GST returns as a professional, bid on government e-tenders, or apply for a trademark, a Class 3 certificate is not optional. Portals reject lower-assurance certificates outright.

Signing versus encryption

A Class 3 certificate can carry two capabilities. The signing certificate proves a document came from you and has not been altered. The encryption certificate secures confidential data so only the intended recipient can read it. Most professionals need both, which is why we issue a combined certificate as standard.

Choosing 2 years or 3 years

The certificate is identical either way — only the validity differs. A two-year certificate costs less upfront; a three-year certificate costs less per year and means one fewer renewal cycle to remember. If your filing obligations are steady and ongoing, three years is usually the better economics.

What you will need

For an individual certificate: your PAN card, an address proof such as Aadhaar, a recent photograph, and a mobile number and email address for OTP and video verification. That is genuinely all of it.
